Ever since I started cycling and, more recently, trail running, I've been blown away by the sites that I see en route to the top of a mountain, or cruising along the coastline to Cape Point. Often I've taken photos and either put them on twitpic, facebook or just left them on my phone to show my friends, which is normally met with a good response each time.
So the other day, as usual, I stood atop a mountain and looked out across an incredible view. I figured it was time to stop being selfish and create a place where others can also show off what we almost take for granted on our various endeavours.
I also wanted the blog to lightly promote exercise for those of us who need a little inspiration to get out there. I wanted to show that it's not all pain and no gain, that there is some serious reward for your efforts at the end of the day… And so spawned "Wish you were Here" a user-generated photo blog.
Converting a Theme
Knowing how easy it is to publish content on Tumblr (I've been using it on http://marcperel.tumblr.com ) I knew that it was the perfect platform to use for this project, and in our latest theme MicroDepth, I had the perfect theme (with its semi transparent elements) to suit.
The basic conversion from regular MicroDepth to Wish You Were Here took literally 5 minutes. This consisted of finding a breathtaking background for the blog, domain registration and securing a tumblr extension.
After a few more tweaks to add the submission page and other relevant into, I had a really cool community generated blog ready for launch.
In order to keep the site moving forward and varied (who wants to see a thousand pictures of Hout Bay?) I've opened the site up to the community, so that any one can show off their own pictures.
So feel free to submit your shots (there are some basic rules) and I'll publish them as we go along.

I like this. It looks like a lonely place to not share it with someone. Must be nice jogging with such a nice view.

I thought the photos of SA were wondderful but am glad you are opening it up for other contributions. The world offers so many wonderful possibilities.
Im disabled so its hard to get around at the moment, but hopefully I can share something of my adopted home here in Wales and the tribal territory back home in the States eventually. 8)).

Yeah really nice work & a great project. My only problem is that I actually saw this site before and couldnt really work out who was behind it or what exactly it was about.
I think get your face on there, I know you explain in the sidebar too what the site is about, but I think it could be more obvious, and also more of a focus for users to submit.
It works as is for sure, just a observation from me, even before I really know you guys were behind it.
Also Im very jealous of these damn pics. I need to find somewhere else to live for sure.
